Naughton to Host Community Substance Abuse Awareness Forum

(Boston) – State Representative Harold P. Naughton, Jr. is pleased to announce that he will be sponsoring a “Community Substance Abuse Awareness Forum” on May 10th from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Clinton High School Auditorium.  The event will consist of two parts; an hour of helpful resource tables hosted by various substance abuse organizations, companies, and stakeholders, and then a panel consisting of experts in the field of substance abuse, public safety, and public health.  The event will be co-sponsored by the Clinton Police Department and The Item newspaper.

“It is vital that we work together to combat the ongoing substance abuse crisis we are currently facing throughout the state,” said Representative Naughton.  “I am proud to team up with the Clinton Police Department as well as The Item and I would like to thank them for offering their support on this important issue.  I am bringing this awareness forum to our community to build off of the marquee substance abuse legislation that was passed last month, giving our state much needed tools to fight this ongoing battle.  My hope is that high school students, their parents, and anyone else interested can attend this forum, and get the much needed help and resources they’ve been looking for.”

While the legislation passed last month was a crucial step in the right direction, this community forum is designed to raise awareness, and educate people about the actions they can take to limit exposure to all types of substance abuse.

The panel will be moderated by Representative Naughton, who is also House Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.  Included on the panel will be Lt. Brian Coyne of the Clinton Police Department; a representative from Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early’s office; a representative from Clinton Hospital’s Emergency Department; Charles Farris, CEO of Spectrum Health Systems; Senator Jen Flanagan, and Representative Liz Malia, Chairwomen of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse; and Jen Barrelle, Director of Policy and Planning at the Department of Public Health.

Resource tables will be set up from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  The panel discussion will take place from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. with a question and answer session for all attendees for the last half hour.  This event is open to the general public, and anyone interested is encouraged to attend.
