Naughton Announces 2nd Annual Celebration of Armed Forces Day

(Boston) - Representative Harold P. Naughton, Jr. is pleased to announce that he will be co-sponsoring the 2nd Annual Armed Forces Day event on Saturday May 21, 2016 from 9am to 10:30am.  The event honors all service men and women, active or retired and will take place at SAC Park, 438 Lake Street, Shrewsbury.  Naughton will be joined by other Central Massachusetts legislators.  The event is open to all active and retired military personnel and members of the public who would like to participate in honoring those who have served.

“I am honored to once again have the opportunity to participate in this great event,” said Representative Naughton.  “Armed Forces Day is a chance for us to honor, recognize, and thank those who take the responsibility of serving and defending our nation.”  Representative Naughton is a Major in the United States Army Reserve serving as a Judge Advocate and was recently deployed to southwest Asia in 2015.

This year’s event will feature special guest speakers Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, Women Veterans Coordinator for the Massachusetts Department of Veterans Services, TSgt, USAF (RET) Mary E. Gallagher, and Manager of Strategic Partnerships at Veterans Inc., First Lieutenant Brenda Heller, US Army. Shrewsbury High School Senior Carly O’Brien will perform the National Anthem. Attendees will enjoy music, readings and a continental breakfast while recounting the history of each branch of the military.

Armed Forces day was created in 1949 by then US Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson, to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days and unify all branches of the military under the Department of Defense.  It is a Day to pay tribute to those actively serving and those who have served their country in times of war and peace.
